Johannes Chum Biography
He was invited to sing Weills TODSÜNDEN with HK Gruber at the Grafenegg Festival Austria and at the Enescu Festival Bukarest. With J.v.Zweden and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra he performed Bachs MATTHÄUSPASSION (Evangelist) at the Meyerson Center in Dallas and sung Ferrando in COSI FAN TUTTE at the Oper Leipzig, conducted by Antony Bramall.
At the Theater an der Wien he performed Hohenzollern in Henzes PRINZ VON HOMBURG with M.Albrecht/C.Loy), Kudrjasch in Janaceks KATJA KABANOWA with K.Petrenko/K.Warner and Tito in LA CLEMENZA DI TITO with P.Carignani.
The tenor was nominated Singer of the Year in Czech Republic after singing TITO at the National Theatre in Prague. His performance of Tamino in ZAUBERFLÖTE in Salzburg was awarded with the Eberhard-Waechter-Medaille. He sang FERRANDO in Berlin Komische Oper with K.Petrenko/P.Konwitschny, FERRANDO in Köln and Salzburg and IDOMENEO in Graz and Wiesbaden. In Berlin, Graz (P.Jordan), Frankfurt (P.Carignani) and Rouen he was Don Ottavio in DON GIOVANNI.
The Austrian singer has also performed Strauss´ FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN (Jüngling) with U.Schirmer/R.Wilson at the Opera de Bastille in Paris. At the Liceu Barcelona he was Libenskof in Rossinis IL VIAGGIO A REIMS with J.Lopez-Cobos and Laerte in Thomas´ HAMLET with B.d.Billy. With R.Jacobs he sang Monteverdi at the Staatsoper unter den Linden Berlin, at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris and at the BAM New York.
Other significant appearances were with C.Mackerras at Salzburg Festival (LE NOZZE DI FIGARO), Dietfried Bernet at Bregenz Festival (JULIETTE of Martinu) and A.Fischer (L´ISOLA DISABITATA and ARMIDA) at the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt.
For Johannes Chum concerts are as important as opera and his concert credits include Berlioz´ BENVENUTO CELLINI with R.Norrington in Brussels and London and Mendelssohns PAULUS in Vienna. K.Järvi conducted his Johannes in Schmidts BUCH MIT SIEBEN SIEGELN in Vienna, LIED VON DER ERDE at the Musikfest Bremen and CARMINA BURANA at the Grafenegg Festival. With F.Luisi he sang BEETHOVEN-C-DUR-MESSE and Strawinskis LES NOCES at the Musikverein Wien.
He also works in close collaboration with R.Chailly: Bachs WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM in Zurich, Tel Aviv, Bethlehem and Jerusalem; MATTHÄUSPASSION in Milano, Leipzig and London; Beethovens 9.SYMPHONY in Leipzig Gewandhaus.
Last season Johannes Chum returned to De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, where he sang Menelaos in Trojahns OREST (world premiere) with M.Albrecht/K.Mitchell. After that he continued his collaboration with J.E.Köpplinger in Klagenfurt and enjoyed major success in the challenging role of Mathias Freudhofer in Kienzls EVANGELIMANN.
Among recent and future projects: Lionel in Flotows MARTHA at Gärtnerplatztheater München and Beehovens FIDELIO with N.Harnoncourt at the Theater an der Wien ; Beethovens 9.SYMPHONY with R.Chailly at Alicante and Leipzig. , Hoffenbach’s Barbe Bleue in Syriarte with Nicolas Harnoncourt and his first LOHENGRIN at the Oper Graz in September 2013 untill may 2014.
Loge, Parsifal and Stolzing are planned for 2014 and 2015, as well as Paul in Die Tode Stadt.
Among 2015/16/17 highlights, he sings Loge Rheingold- at the Festivals «Wagner in China» in Shanghai, Don Qishotte with René Jacobs in Viena, Cologne and Paris, sings a big tour with the Gewandhaus Leipzig with Bach‘s Weihnachtsoratorium…, makes his debut in Flamand (Capriccio) in Metz Opera, sing Beethoven 9. in Graz, la Clemenza de Titus at the Komische Oper Berlin, Prinz in Rusalka in Tours 2017.
